BMW Convertibles
Despite the beginnings of Corvette Racing spotty, their presence has never been interrupted at the racetrack because they are generally very and always a serious competitor. If it were not for the rich heritage Corvette Racing, the car would never become GM's halo car. Unlike the '50s when GM said: "We do not race cars, the '80 's and '90' sa seen many drag racing and NASCAR Factory Racing effort Chevrolet and Chevrolet. When the C5 came, GM Racing final.
The manufacturers of racing cars Pratt & Miller were hired to help design, develop, and build the C5-R. In '99, the first all-out, factory-supported Team Corvette Racing hit the track. The first year was rough with 2 finishes in 5 races. In 2000, the team collected 2 wins in 8 races. Then in '01 team took 8 wins in 10 races, including the ultimate price to win Le Mans for the first time. For 2002, the C5-R team has won 10 of 11 races, including Le Mans. In 2003, the team changed its colors to paint the familiar bright yellow to dark blue cap with white and red stripes on it. The competition was particularly strong in '03 and the team "only" won 5 of 10 races and took second place at Le Mans.
Back in the world of Corvette production, work is well underway on the Corvette C6. The C5 was designed so that by '99 Corvette engineers had done almost everything they wanted to do with the C5. It did not take much convincing for the Corvette Chief Engineer Dave Hill to defend a brand new Corvette with a projected launch date to coincide with the 2003 50th anniversary. 2001 has not been a good year for GM and the economy, the C6 has been proposed on hold. When the C6 has finally received the green light, the introduction has been proposed as a '05 model.
The introduction of a new Corvette is a challenge for the planners of the Corvette, how do you generate interest in the last year production of a car when customers know that a new car is coming soon? Answer; make an issue "special". The C3 C4 Corvettes last and offered special editions. So planners benefited from the success of the C5-R riders and offered the option Commemorative Edition available on all three models of Corvette, coupe, convertible, and Z06.
All Corvettes '04 Special Commemorative Edition Le Mans had painted in blue with bold white bands running along the dome hood, top, and the upper deck, thin strips of red on the outside of the two bands white. Included were special badges, embroidery on the headrests, and polished with special Z06 wheel center caps. Since carbon fiber is a material common use on race cars, the commemorative edition was the first production Corvette to use a hood in carbon fiber. You can see the weave of carbon fiber between the red and white stripes. Coupe and convertible editions had a two-tone interior of slate, while the Z06 had a development all black interior. To sweeten the deal, all representations and the luxury option was included. The coupe and convertible option cost $ 3700, while the Z06 version costs $ 4335. A total of 6899 homes were built, representing 20 percent of all sales in '04 Vette. Version Z06 Corvette was the most expensive in '04 at a cost of approximately $ 13,500 based on the Corvette, for a total of nearly $ 58,000.
So, to return to our original question: is the '04 Commemorative Edition Z06 the "best" of the C5 Corvettes? Not to diminish C5S other, but this package had the trim, paint, and cover with unique carbon fiber, which were available in '04 Option with this package. So, if I must choose a Corvette that represents the pinnacle of production Corvettes performance, I would vote for the '04 Commemorative Edition Z06.
I'm sure if Zora Arkus-Duntov was still running the show Corvette, he wanted "more" for editing Memorial - at least front and rear spoilers, a bulging hood, driving lights ... Ah, now I'm carried away.
