After its launch at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, a fleet of three BMW Hydrogen 7s will take part in the Revolve Brighton to London rally low and zero pollution. The BMW Hydrogen 7, which is based on the chassis of the standard 7-series is equipped with an internal combustion engine bivalent which is capable of operating on hydrogen or gasoline. In hydrogen mode, the BMW Hydrogen 7 basically emits nothing more than water vapor. Powered by a 260hp 12-cylinder saloon accelerates from zero to 62 mph in 9.5 seconds before going to a speed of 143 mph electronically limited top.
The driver can switch easily and quickly from hydrogen fuel for regular gasoline at the press of a steering wheel-mounted button with a single engine bi-fuel. The dual power technology means that the car has a range of cruise over 125 miles in hydrogen mode, with more than 300 miles under petrol power. The Hydrogen 7 is equipped a heater core "> BMW heater core, 74-tank litregasoline additional hydrogen and a fuel tank that can hold up eight kilograms of liquid hydrogen is stored at -253 degrees Celsius. This flexibility means that the driver of a BMW Hydrogen 7 is able to use the vehicle at any time, even when the nearest filling station for hydrogen is out of reach. At Wembley, a filling station in order was built to support the vehicle manufacturer.
Power and torque in the sedan remains exactly the same despite the type of fuel used. The driver can switch between the two without any effect on the conduct or behavior. The Hydrogen 7 gives priority to always use hydrogen, but should this fail, the vehicle automatically switches to petrol power.
Unlike previous hydrogen cars concept displayed by rival manufacturers the BMW Hydrogen 7 is considered a milestone in automotive history. This is a vehicle ready for full production, which has met all the stringent processes and final approval criteria that every current BMW model undergoes.
"A more efficient car manufacturers is to focus on high-mileage gasoline-powered vehicles. They are much simpler and less sexy than hydrogen cars, Mr. Talbot said, but for now they are piling up as the cleaner option, "the Wall Street Journal concluded.
