BMW E36 DIY
This is not very cold up there yet, but we believe a cold winter is ahead of us, which is bad news for owners of convertible with plastic rear window.
The freezing cold weather tends to make plastic windows very fragile and vulnerable to damage - this reflected in the number of customers we Get in the December and January months.
It is one of the most annoying when you realize your hood looking for a perfect hole in the plastic rear window! The cover looks great, except for the hole / RIP / tear in the window. It seems a shame having to replace the entire cover if it's just the window that needs replacing. Fortunately, it is often possible to replace only the window back, rather than the whole hood!
Every car design has a different type of hood, sometimes there is even a choice of hoods with a list of different types of rear window. The Mazda MX5 for example, comes in a choice of material - vinyl or fabric - and a choice of the window - plastic, glass heated plastic zipper, plastic uncompressed, compressed glass heated, compressed non-heated glass and some other variants.
9 out of 10 times a plastic rear window can be replaced, some easier than others. For example, the BMW E30, BMW E36 and BMW Z3 comes mainly a zipper around the right of the window. This means that only the cost of labor involved is unzip and move the old like a flash in the rear window again - a 45-minute job. You must ensure that it is difficult for an OEM window so you can be sure it fits properly.
The Mercedes 129 is not quite as simple as that. The window is sewn into the hood real so all the hoods must be removed so that the seam to be disconnected and the new window Re-stitched. There is much work to do here, so the price for the replacement of this window can be very high, but it is still a cheaper option than a cap new heights.
The Mazda MX5 also has a zip, but just above the hood and are not part of the meeting pf window. The window is sewn into the hood. This means that, as the Mercedes hood the hood must be completely removed, the seam ripped, and the window replaced.
The Peugeot 306 has a very interesting way of setting the window to the hood - is cast in place using electrodes. There are son running around the edge of the window through which a current is passed, which in turn, heats and bonds the hood. We suspect Peugeot garages that are in a position of obligation to a window in this manner.
It is still possible for us to replace the window, but do not use the method of the electrode. What we want to do is remove the old window and replace it with a seam in a new place. The only difference here is that the seams are visible.
Some forests have a rear window bonded, which means that the window is stuck on the hood using heat. A large press-welding done that, and obligations and presses the heated molten plastic material in the hood. ETC has such a tool, which allows us Windows bonds in the hood. The cover assembly must be removed to do this so that the old windows can be purchased and a new window can be glued in place.
The other day we had an old MGB come with a small hole in the plastic glass. The owner wanted us to replace the damaged section only but unfortunately this particular hood has a rear window that covers both the rear and side windows. We have advised our client to buy a new hood, because the cost of labor to rip the whole section would cost more than buying a Brand new MG vinyl cover.

BMW 3 Series (E36) $71.7 The BMW E36 is the third generation of the 3 Series compact executive cars produced by BMW. It was introduced in late 1990 (as a 1991 model) for Europe and in late 1991 (as a 1992 model) for US and Canada.
