In the spring of 2004, gasoline prices skyrocketed, and they never back down. Some people blamed the war, others accused oil companies, which have been raking in huge profits.
The truth is that a combination of factors influencing oil prices. The companies themselves have little actual control over the price of oil. If someone has a direct influence on oil prices it would be OPEC, but even they have no control over the main factor, which is simple supply and demand.
Why Are So High Price oil?
There are two expenses involved to get oil out of the land and consumers: the oil itself, and the process refining.
Crude oil itself has risen in price for two main reasons. First, access to crude oil became increasingly difficult. The regions that produce more crude in the world, like Nigeria, Iran and Iraq, are increasingly unstable. This has a major effect on oil prices.
But even more important is the growing demand for oil worldwide. The economies of developing countries fast as India and China are growing beyond expectations. They need oil for automobiles and heavy industry, which puts a pressure on oil supplies.
Oil is expensive, but the cost of refining oil adds more than 50% at cost. For the United States, it has become increasingly expensive over the years because we are under our own refinery. More recent and more stringent EPA regulations have made oil refining more costly and less profitable businesses to Stateside. In addition, recent hurricanes Rita and Katrina caused significant damage oil refineries in the United States in the Gulf and the oil industry has not recovered.
What You Can Do
You can not control the world economy, but there are certain things you can do to save a little money at the pump.
Driving a smaller car. It is difficult to give up the SUV or 4 wheel truck, but driving a smaller, lighter car will save you money on gas.
When you buy gas, use the lowest quality oil. For most cars, the difference between low grade and premium is relatively insignificant, your car will drive much the same. The only difference is the money you'll save.
Drive slower. This may also be impossible, but the way you drive has a direct effect on how you burn gas. Person does slow down, but here's an idea that might help you to consider: The EPA estimates that for every 5 miles per hour over 60, you drive, you burn about 20 cents more on gas. Who can build up very quickly. Think about it when you step on the gas!
Try driving in high speed. Think of it this way: The slower your engine turns over, the less gas you use.
The rapid acceleration and coast when possible. If you step on the gas to go up, you'll burn more gas.
Remember that the lighter your car the less gas you use. This means that you can save money on gas by removing luggage racks and other things that weigh on your car. Reduce drag and save money.
The actual cost of gas has not increased over time, taking into account inflation, Americans pay the same percent of our paychecks for gas today than we did in the 1950s. This is interesting, but this does not alleviate the pain of paying a lot! Follow these tips and save some money for gas.
