Throughout its history, BMW cars and motorcycles have been successful in a range of motorsport activities. Mainly before WW2, BMW motorcycles were winning e.g. at the Isle of Man TT. Apart from the factory efforts, many privateer teams enter BMW road cars in Touring car racing. BMW also entered cars or provided engines in Formula One, Formula Two and sportscar racing. BMW is currently active in ALMS, Formula One, the World Touring Car Championship (WTCe and the World Superbike Championship. An outstanding role played the 1500 cc BMW M10 engine block. The four cylinder started with modest 75 hp (56 kW) in 1961, became successful in touring cars, developed over 300 hp (224 kW) in 1970s Formula Two, and at the ripe age of a quarter century, produced almost twentyfold its original power in the 1986 turbocharged BMW M12/13/1. As the base of the BMW S14 engine of the original BMW M3, it collected many more wins. In the late 1970s, Italian manufacturer Lamborghini entered into an agreement with BMW to build a production racing car in sufficient quantity for homologation. The result was sold to the public, from 1978 to 1981, as the BMW M1. It was the only midengined BMW to be mass produced. It employed a twincam M88/1 3.5 L 6 cylinder gasoline engine with Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection. A version of this motor was later used in the South African version of the BMW 735i, of which 209 examples were built between 1984 and 1986, as well as the E24 BMW M6/M635CSi and E28 BMW M5. The engine had six separate throttle butterflies, four valves per cylinder and produced 277 PS (204 kW; 273 hp) in the street version, giving a top speed of 260 km/h (160 mph). Turbocharged racing versions were capable of producing around 850 hp (634 kW). The M1 coupe was handbuilt between 1978 and 1981 under the Motorsport division of BMW as a homologation special for sports car racing. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The BMW R32 was the first motorcycle produced by BMW under the BMW name. An aircraft engine manufacturer during World War I, BMW was forced to diversify after the Treaty of Versailles banned the German air force and German aircraft manufacture. BMW initially turned to industrial engine design and manufacturing. In 1919, BMW designed and manufactured the flattwin M2B15 engine for Victoria Werke AG of Nuremberg. The engine was initially intended as a portable industrial engine, but found its main use in Victoria motorcycles. The engine was also used in the Helios motorcycle built by Bayerisch Flugzeug, which was later merged into BMW AG. Bayerisch Flugzeug also manufactured a small twostroke engined motorcycle, called the Flink, which was not successful. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The BMW 003 was an early axialflow turbojet engine produced by BMW AG in Germany during World War II. It and the Junkers Jumo 004 were the only German turbojet engines to reach production during World War II. Work had begun on the design of the BMW 003 before its contemporary, the Junkers Jumo 004 engine, but prolonged developmental problems meant that the BMW 003 entered production much later, and the aircraft projects that had been designed with it in mind were reengined with the Jumo powerplant instead. The most famous case of this was the Messerschmitt Me 262, in two of the Vseries prototypes and in the two experimental A1b aircraft, and the same was true of the Arado Ar 234 and Horten Ho 229. The only production aircraft to use the BMW 003 were the Heinkel He 162 and late, fourengined versions of the Arado Ar 234. The BMW K1 is a motorcycle that was designed by BMW as a highspeed sportstourer, designed to change the motorcycle media and buying publics mind of BMW as only a manufacturer of flattwin tourers. Based on the previously introduced BMW K100, the K1 was designed for comfortable highspeed autobahn cruising at speeds of up to 150 mph (240 km/h). The radical aerodynamic design was a seven piece glass fibre structure, creating a world class leading drag coefficient of 0.38. It was mated with a stiffened chassis, that included a single sided Paralever swingarm, design to stop shaft drive induced pitch and dive under heavy acceleration and braking, the first use of this on a K series bike.
