BMW M50 Engines
BMW 1998 523 TOURING replacement engine?
MY MOTOR 1998 BMW began to give out blue SMOKE. MECHANIC INFORMED THE REPLACEMENT MOTOR. I I bought ON EBAY ADVERTISING M50 and M52 single VANOS 2.5. The guy said it would be appropriate, but WHEN MECHANIC ATTEMPT he said he is totally different. Now I must buy one from SOMEPLACE OTHER AND HAVE AN ENGINE PARTS. The old fool I BOUGHT THE ENGINE STILL says it will FIT. His information said that change the throttle body and wiring ENGINE OF MY JOB AND MADE IN OLD NEW. The one he gave for me and CHNAGE ENGINE Mountaga and the sump. MECHANIC WAY not say it wont work. DUNNO whether to give THIS GUY BAD FEEDBACK AS I DO NOT KNOW. He has lost much of my time and the cost is high. MY ENGINE IS COURSE OF NATURE 2.5 SINGLE VANOS M52 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. 256S3. ALL WITH A GOOD advice would be a big star. PLEASE READ.
Your vendor is basically correct. You do not say what he sold you specifically, but if it comes from a series of 3, then the oil pan is different and should be reversed. There are also differences in May and computer, but it should be quite possible to make it work. It appears that your mechanic might be out its depth, or no experience with BMW. Saw an earlier question that looked like, maybe you? If the engine you have received is an E34 5-Series without VANOS then it would be compatible if you can renovate your VANOS cylinder head. BTW, ALL CAPS makes reading difficult, and it is interpreted as a cry.

Mainly before WW2, BMW motorcycles were winning e.g. at the Isle of Man TT. Apart from the factory efforts, many privateer teams enter BMW road cars in Touring car racing. BMW also entered cars or provided engines in Formula One, Formula Two and sportscar racing. BMW is currently active in ALMS, Formula One, the World Touring Car Championship (WTCe and the World Superbike Championship. An outstanding role played the 1500 cc BMW M10 engine block. The four cylinder started with modest 75 hp (56 kW) in 1961, became successful in touring cars, developed over 300 hp (224 kW) in 1970s Formula Two, and at the ripe age of a quarter century, produced almost twentyfold its original power in the 1986 turbocharged BMW M12/13/1. As the base of the BMW S14 engine of the original BMW M3, it collected many more wins.
