BMW Manifolds

DO NOT PANIC!
This indicator lamp is controlled by an electronic management system fitted to modern cars called (OBD2 or OBD-II). OBD is an acronym for On Board Diagnostics. The OBD2 system is designed to give you early warning of faults, and allow you to remedy. There are two possible ways for the lamp is lit.
- In the normal course of starting the engine, the lamp lights and then goes off after a few seconds. If the lamp does not turn off, or just in the middle of normal driving, the On Board Diagnostics system letting you know that it has detected a fault. This does not mean you should stop the car and the engine running. It means that you must have the vehicle inspected as soon as possible. Over there are literally hundreds of possible reasons for the light coming, some as simple as leaving the tank cap bulk fuel after refueling.
- The lamp may begin to flash while driving. This is potentially a more serious problem and usually involves an engine problem which could cause serious damage if left unattended. There is still no cause panic. The fault does not render the vehicle dangerous to drive. There is however an obligation to rectify the fault as soon as possible to avoid damaging expensive engines.
In many ways it is a result unsatisfactory situation. You know you have a problem, but you do not know what it is, or its severity. What repair shops want you to do is to vet vehicle with their OBD scanner. This is an expensive exercise, even when the cause is simple and easily corrected by the average driver.
More recently, another option has become available for the handyman. It is now possible to buy a cheap unit that can plug directly into a PC, laptop or handheld. With appropriate software, you can query the OBD2 system and discover why the fault light came on. If you can easily correct the fault in yourself when you've saved on the cost of a repair bill. If fixing the fault is beyond your expertise and you still need to visit the repair shop, at least you can tell them what is the problem. This should also make save money by reducing the time required for diagnosis.
However, being able to read error codes is aspects of a system OBD2. There is so much more to it than that. If you have a Carputer installed in your vehicle, you can have your Carputer permanently connected to your system OBD2. This gives you the opportunity to interrogate the system for all variables that it monitors, any speed and engine speed to multiple pressures, air flows and a host of other data.
