BMW open differential benefits??
I have a 1996 BMW 328i, and I was just wondering what are the advantages of having a differential free with respect to a limited slip differential? I really hate to have an open diff, so im planning to buy M3 used a diff soon.
On slippery surfaces, a rear wheel drive vehicle with a open differential will start sliding to a slightly higher speed in bends than one with a limited slip - it's the only good thing. And it costs less. However, the down - once the beginning of sliding, the vehicle with limited slip is much, much easier to control. With the limited slip, you can control the vehicle with the tail Hung Out. With an open differential, the control is almost impossible - the couple switches back and forth between the two rear wheels so quickly that you're basically just to share the adventure. Another drawback is very sensitive on muddy / snowy roads or those with the puddle deep water. The vehicle with the limited slip will track straighter than either side of the vehicle meets the requirements of different routes, where the open differential will wander an awful lot. Modern systems of traction control can help a little, and often work better with a differential free, as the limited slip can fight against anti-skating in some cases. My preference is for a limited slip differential, rather that I pay to have one installed in my vehicle came with an open differential.
