BMW Oracle Boat
The Americas Cup (or Auld Mug as it is familiarly known) is the oldest sporting trophy in known existence, the first competition in 1851 dating before the modern Olympics by almost 50 years. Won by the schooner America, the Grail Cup is almost sacred status as the millionaires early 20th century with names such as Lipton, Sopwith and Vanderbilt all featuring in the competition early. Despite the efforts of Britains finest however, the America's Cup has been adopted by Americans from 1851 through 1983, the longest winning streak in sports history, until finally being captured by Australian Alan Bond and his radical, winged keel Australia 2.
As Australia 2's victory, it is fair to say that history has been turbulent enough cups. The trophy was recovered almost immediately by United States in 1987, but the year has seen a dramatic expansion of the competitive challenge traditional 2 project with the American boat Stars and Stripes have to beat an opponent unprecedented 13 unions and Alan Bond Australians failing even to reach the final defenders. His argue that the difficulties and legal wrangles that have hit the event since then can be directly traced back to the expansion of the event in 1987. Following this, the Auld Mug has suffered from changes in classes of vessels (which peaked in 1988 when a catamaran U.S. rejected a New Zealand monohull on the water and the decision was subsequently overturned twice before the courts) and probably ego businessmen modern, multi-millionaire who is determined to win the Cup at all costs and do not seem to mind that this is done by seamen or by the lawyers.
The latest threat to cut just the current holders Alinghi and their legal dispute with the U.S. team Oracle BMW. Incredibly, the union Aling is from landlocked Switzerland, but their team, who held the cup since 2003, is packed with world stars sailing with a strong contingent of New Zealanders. Adding spice to the proceedings is the fact that Kiwi Russell Coutts, regarded by many as the greatest sailor in the world, led Alinghi won the Cup challenge in 2003 but has since left the ship at the head of the rival team of BMW Oracle.
At issue is the fact that after their successful defense of the Cup in 2007, Alinghi chose the Spanish club Yacht Club Nautico de Espana Velo as Challenger of Record. BMW Oracle, led by software billionaire Larry Ellison has challenged successfully in court that because the Club Nautico de Espana was Velo not a yacht club function, but simply a shell that had been put in place to manage a Challenge Cup. While there is widespread concern in the cup rings on the relationship between Alinghi and the Spanish and the current American syndicate BMW Oracle the challenger is designated for the next Cup. Unfortunately for the worlds oldest sports competition, the legal challenges have not stopped and when it is still uncertain when the next Cup will take place, in what country it will be the same type of boat, it will be attacked in. The fall out of this was considerable. The cup has lost Louis Vuitton as a sponsor and other difficult unions (which include the British Team Origin, skippered by Olympic star Ben Ainslie), are severely constrained in their ability to attract funding and planning all levels of their campaigns from boats for personal Chandlery being given the current level of uncertainty surrounding the event.
It remains to be seen what happens to the Americas Cup, if we get a competition in 2008 or 2009 and if so, what will the outcome. The biggest fear is that if Alinghi, BMW Oracle and their lawyers will do what 150 years of history and could not stop the America's Cup.
