Hello and welcome back to our series on things the new weekend warrior auto mechanic should have or know. In the past we have spent a lot of time discussing various tools and their usage but today I'm going to talk a bit about some things that you should always have in your car. So without wasting much time, let's get right to the list.
Rags - You should always have some clean, lint free rags in your car. I normally just put clean rags in a plastic bag and throw them in my trunk, but typically just keeping one in your glove box is fine. Do not do this with oily or gasoline soaked rags, that is a fire hazard waiting to happen. When you do get a rag dirty, be sure to throw it away or wash it immediately.
Spare parts - Yes you read that correctly, spare parts. Now I'm not talking about water pumps here but rather just an air filter, an extra spark plug or two, and maybe a long spark plug wire from your last tune up if it's still good. Oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and brake fluid you should have on hand as well.
Emergency parts - I always have an extra belt, coolant hose, fuses, and radiator cap in my car at all times. They are typically pretty cheap and if you get stuck without them, you could put yourself in a jam.
Spare tire - We all have them for the most part, but when was the last time you checked yours? At least once a month (normally the first weekend of the month) I check to make sure that mine is holding pressure well and is up to the correct pressure listed on the side of it. It's really embarrassing to go through all the work of getting to replacing your tire on the side of the road only to find out that your spare is flat as well.
Lug Nut Wrench - Hopefully you understand the importance of having this. If you have to buy one, buy the "Four way" version that looks like an X. They are the most useful I have found.
Jumper Cables - You must have a set of these at all times. Dead or dying batteries or even just leaving your lights on overnight can create a major headache that having a set of jumper cables can help you avoid.
Snow and Ice Equipment - If you happen to live in an area that sees's a decent amount of winter snow it's never a bad idea to have a collapsible emergency shovel. A can of de-icer is never a bad idea either.
Flashlight and Reflectors - flashlights can be a real benefit if you break down at night. In addition they can be used to alert oncoming traffic that you are broken down. Reflectors are great for that same purpose. I suggest them over road flares since road flares can be dangerous and some states are picky about how you use them.
First Aid Kit - I thinking the reasoning here can go without saying.
Spare Tools - If you have read my other articles than you should have already known this. But in the event you haven't, always carry a set of spare tools in your trunk. You never know when you may need them and unlike other things, sometimes when you are stranded and need a certain tool there's no way around it.
