In the late 1970s, Italian manufacturer Lamborghini entered into an agreement with BMW to build a production racing car in sufficient quantity for homologation. The result was sold to the public, from 1978 to 1981, as the BMW M1. It was the only midengined BMW to be mass produced. It employed a twincam M88/1 3.5 L 6 cylinder gasoline engine with Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection. A version of this motor was later used in the South African version of the BMW 735i, of which 209 examples were built between 1984 and 1986, as well as the E24 BMW M6/M635CSi and E28 BMW M5. The engine had six separate throttle butterflies, four valves per cylinder and produced 277 PS (204 kW; 273 hp) in the street version, giving a top speed of 260 km/h (160 mph). Turbocharged racing versions were capable of producing around 850 hp (634 kW). The M1 coupe was handbuilt between 1978 and 1981 under the Motorsport division of BMW as a homologation special for sports car racing. It was manufactured from 1932 to 1934, replacing the 3/15 model that was initially an Austin 7 manufactured under licence from the Austin Motor Company. The engine used in the 3/20 was based on the Austin Seven engine used in the 3/15, but its crankshaft ran in plain bearings instead of roller bearings and had an 80 mm (3.1 in) stroke, generating a displacement of 788 cc (48.1 cu in). The new engine design also had a water pump and an overhead valve cylinder head. These design changes caused the engine to generate 20 hp, but did not change the taxable horsepower rating of 3 PS, thus giving the model designation 3/20. The BMW M3 was first introduced on the E30 platform. A widened version of the E30 front suspension and the drivetrain from the E30 325i were used in the BMW Z1 roadster. The E30 3Series was produced in four body styles, a four door saloon, a two door saloon, a five door estate (marketed as the touring ), and a two door convertible. A Baur cabrio was also available. The 325ix was produced from 1988 to 1991, and featured allwheel drive. It was available as a twodoor (saloon) or a fourdoor (sedan) and as touring. The BMW M3 utilised a widened and heavily redesigned and restyled variation of the 2 door body style. The M3 shares few parts with other E30 models. Models include the F650ST Strada, F650 Funduro, F650GS and F650GS Dakar. They were the first singlecylinder motorcycles from BMW since the R27, as well as the first chain driven motorcycles from BMW. The BMW F650 Funduro and F650ST Strada were introduced to Europe in 1993 and to the United States in 1997, where they sold at an MSRP of US7,498. The bikes were jointly designed by BMW and Aprilia, who launched their model as the Pegaso. The BMW bikes, which were built in Italy by Aprilia, were powered by an Austrian 652 cc single cylinder Rotax engine. It was the first BMW motorcycle with chain drive. There were two variants: the F650 Funduro was a dual purpose bike, and the F650ST Strada had a smaller 18 inch front wheel and was intended for street use.
