In October 2009, Max Mosley has resigned as president of the FIA (Fà © dà © ration Internationale de l'Automobile) and was replaced by the newly elected Jean Todt, that Mosley had approved. Mosley had been president of the governing body for motorsports Premier since 1993, and his 16 year reign was not without controversy.

While the FIA, a nonprofit organization based in Paris, organized to represent the interests of motor sports professionals, club racing enthusiasts and general users through the world, he is best known as the governing body of Formula 1 World Championship Rally and other racing series. In was in his role as head the governing body of Formula 1 that Mosely reached its reputation.

Early in his term of office, Mosley established himself as a proponent Security increased in the sport. After the death of Roland Ratzenberger and three-time world champion Aytron Senna at Imola in 1994, Mosley has urged FIA to establish new technical security measures to improve driver safety. These changes have included greater protection of cockpit and limited rear diffusers, which was to carry out the reduction of support, thereby reducing the cornering speeds of cars.

Many directors of Formula 1 team criticized the new measures as "indiscriminate and arbitrary, but, for better or for worse, Max Mosley established his management style.

Other rule changes Mosley promoted and launched live sport included in the mid-race fuel (which is returned the sport in 1994 for the first time since 1983), which aimed to introduce a new element of strategy in the race, and the grooved tires, which reduced tire traction, thus slowing the cars in the corners.

Unfortunately, since the grooved tires (used for 1998 to 2008 seasons) reduced mechanical grip, the car became increasingly dependent on aerodynamic grip, their front and rear fenders. The Aero-Flow Car Formula 1 is such that if we follow another vehicle too closely into a bend, the car is above being made in the lead car of "air dirty ", ie a flow of turbulent air that Interrupt the downforce on the wing to balance the next car. The greater dependence cars on the downforce, the more they are vulnerable to this effect. The result: close racing and overtaking, this all motor racing fans hope, is largely inhibited.

The unintended effects of grooved tires were known long ago But while virtually all the teams supported a return to "slick", ie not groved tires, Mosley turned a deaf ear to these protests.

Over there were numerous instances of alleged arbitrary style and dictorial Mosley, including his efforts to impose limitations on testing, supply Engines and equipment budget. To his credit, Mosley is wary of potential effects of global recession, should one occur. He realized that the best funded teams, expenses that were perhaps to U.S. $ 500 million would be unable to maintain such spending during a financial crisis.

Over the last decade or so of the occupation of Mosley, the sport has been dominated by the car manufacturers who have acquired teams (eg, Honda, Toyota, Ford, Mercedes, Renault and BMW), either in whole or in partnership, and if manufacturers saw a downtturn in sales, their ability to fund their sporting efforts, if not their reason for being together for sport participation, would questioned.

Mosley has been proven correct on this point. Manufacturers cited, only Mercedes and Renault are. Fiat, which owns the brand Ferrari is an anomaly. The operation of Ferrari has actually been created as a means of financing the activities of race founder Enzo Ferrari.

What is the final verdict on the leadership of Max Mosley FIA. In the credit column, it must be recognized first and foremost for his consistent efforts to improve Safety in sport. Since that fateful weekend at Imola in 1994, there were no deaths of drivers in Formula 1. Even if cars are designed to carry not an ounce of extra weight, they have proved extremely resilient in crash conditions.

Moreover, Mosley correctly predicted the need for cost control in the face of economic challenges that the sport was sure to encounter. In Because of his efforts, the prospects for ensuring the sustainability of the sport have been improved.

On the other hand, Mosley would be voluntary on his ideas, even when the opposition was universal. For the 2009 season, the FIA introduced the use of KERS (Kineteic Energy Recovery System), which was a racing version of a system used to drive hybrid cars. On the road cars, these systems are designed for save fuel. As it has been developed for Formula 1, however, KERS collected kinetic energy normally lost as heat during braking, stored in a special battery, then use the Engergy converted for extra power on straight track.

Mosley promoted the idea as a means of strengthening the "green" image of Formula 1. There is very little that is green on the Formula 1, however, and the system did nothing to save fuel. The use of KERS was optional for 2009, and began to be mandatory for 2010. Only the best funded teams undertook development system for 2009 at a cost of tens of millions of dollars.

In the end, when the team signed a new Concorde Agreement in 2010, incorporating Mandatory KERS has been revised. Under the rules, it is still optional, but teams have mutually agreed not to use it. So much for one brilliant ideas of Mosley. Ultimately, it was considered nothing more than a public relations ploy for the sport and, given the cost of system development, cons in light of other cost-cutting initiatives Mosley.

But such was Max Mosley, a crowd of contradictions.
