BMW has its roots in pre-World War I German aircraft.
Gustav Otto, son of the inventor of the four-stroke internal combustion engine, set up an aircraft factory and training school in 1910. However, after persistent quality problems with production, his company was bought by a consortium in 1916. The company changed its name to Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG (BFW) and began manufacturing aircraft under License Albatros Werke. It quickly became the largest aircraft manufacturer in Bavaria, but at the end of the application of the First World War was collapsed.
Meanwhile, in 1913, an engine designer Karl Rapp had established a company manufacturing aircraft engines, but problems vibrations with their own motors meant that they abandoned the production of V12 engines Austro-Daimler, under license. A man named Franz Josef Popp was put monitor manufacturing. He managed to persuade Karl Rapp to employ a talented design engineer of Daimler, Max Friz. Friz quickly designed a new engine and made such an impact with investors, Karl Rapp was ousted from the company in 1917. At that time the company name was changed Rapp Motorenwerke GmbH Bayerische Motorenwerke BmbH (BMW).
However, in December 1918, BMW was forced to close by the government to end of the First World War. However, in less than three months, BMW was allowed to reopen and began designing a new range of engines, although the company was forced to cease production of aircraft engines. At this stage, an Austrian financier, Camillo Castiglioni, had become a shareholder Majority of BMW.
In the summer of 1919, BMW began to build brake assemblies under license from Knorr-Bremse AG, and about a year Castiglioni later sold its shares in BMW to Knorr-Bremse.
After selling his stake in BMW, Castiglioni became interested in buying BFW which he completed in 1922. On the back of that, he moved to buy back the name of BMW and the engine manufacturing division of Knorr-Bremse. He succeeded, and with the merger of BFW and BMW as the BMW, he also undertook the design and management skills of Max Friz and Franz Josef Popp, in addition engine designs and patents.
BMW has started production of spare engines, while Castiglioni has a lucrative contract with the Czechs to permit production Aircraft engine BMW to use their military.
During the 1920s, BMW has provided Russia with aircraft engines and Castiglioni in addition to being the majority shareholder siphoned brokerage fees on every transaction to its "private" companies.
And engines military, BMW began to build successful small agricultural engines and motorcycles, starting with the R 32 in 1923. They formed the basis of the draft design of a BMW car series in 1925. Then in 1928 the company expanded into automobile production total with the purchase of plant car manufacturing in Eisenach, which made the Dixi (or Austin Seven built under license). The car became known as the BMW 3 / 15 and it was not long before BMW was producing its own designs.
However, business relationships Castiglioni's Got himself and BMW in embarrassment. After selling his majority stake to Deutsche Bank in 1926 to raise personal funds, its irregular payments of the Commission have been duly proved. He settled out of court with a large payment back to BMW and left the board. In 1929 he sold the rest of his commune at Deutsche Bank support its finances.
The case had cost Castiglioni also BMW. The Russian government is aware of the payments of the "Commission" and demanded compensation. BMW issued a license to produce the BMW VI engine and free relations with the Russians came to an end in early 1930.
After the successful expansion of the bike and the car companies in the 1930s, BMW was forced to abandon civilian production by the Party National Socialism during the Second World War and focus on the production of aircraft engines. This included the use of forced labor.
Towards the end of the war, BMW was hit hard by Allied bombing and when the war ended, the sites in eastern Germany have been seized by Russians. Meanwhile, while BMW survived in the West, they were forbidden to manufacture engines for three years and plans of BMW cars and their chief designer Fritz Fiedler were taken to England to begin Cars Bristol. And it was not until 1948 that production of BMW motorcycles has resumed and is in 1952 that automobile production has been reactivated.
The original position models of cars war, such as 507 and 503, were not very profitable and in 1959, BMW has discussed selling the company to Daimler-Benz. The movement was unpopular with the workforce, and fortunately, President Kurt Golda increased its stake in the company to ensure the independence of BMW.
During the 1960 liberation of most sporting models spelled success for BMW. The BMW 1500 (which followed the BMW 700) has led to the BMW 1600 and BMW models 1800 and 1967 two-door and convertible models, which became known as 02 series BMW. These developments eventually led to the creation of the famous BMW 3 Series.
The company expanded, with new production facilities and a new headquarters in Munich.
Entering the 1970s, the BMW 5 series has replaced the sedans, coupes were replaced by the BMW 3 Series and BMW 7 Series was launched, giving BMW are three ranges of sports sedan, which was continued in the 1990s.
BMW has become a global brand in the luxury automotive and sales have increased 18 times. The production runs Germany and has spread across continents, including facilities in the United Kingdom, America, South Africa and India. The company has also formed partnerships with the time, Russian and Chinese producers.
In the mid 1990s, BMW bought Rover from British Aerospace. However, the company struggled to find a role for British brands and make a profit. In 2000 it disposed of Rover to Phoenix Venture Holdings and sold the Land Rover brand to Ford. However, BMW retained the Mini, Triumph and other brands. BMW has since restarted successfully and the Mini brand also continued to ensure Full use of the Rolls Royce (2003).
From its humble origins pre-World War I, the makers of aircraft and engines aircraft, BMW has survived as a result of the postwar entrepreneurial spirit and developed rapidly to become a major global player in the market for prestige cars.
