Mexico is an ideal place to spend the holiday season. Between the fireworks, tamales and how everyone throws open his arms and welcomes you (metaphorically speaking), you're in for once in a life experience! Before you head south of the border, however, make sure you have your paperwork in order, including your Mexican auto insurance!
Mexican auto insurance, you say? Most people did not realize it, but insurance U.S. car does not make you a lot of good once you're outside the States. If you live in Texas, Arizona, California, New Mexico or your insurance company could have concluded a deal with some border towns make life a little easier for commuters who work in Mexico and living in the United States, but Most auto repair shops in Mexico will not accept U.S. insurance.
Why? They have their reasons. Whatever these reasons are. The long and short is that you need to get a Mexican auto insurance.
Preferably before you go.
By Mexican law, the American tourists (or any other type of tourism, for that matter) to come to Mexico for the holiday season have to have what is called an auto insurance policy holiday insurance. If you're unfamiliar with the term insurance Travel Insurance is underwritten by a Mexican insurer for the duration of your holiday. These policies are usually daily, weekly or monthly increments until 6 months. If you will be pending in Mexico until May or June you will need to purchase a regular insurance policy. If you are not, however, a vacation policy is exactly what you need.
You have two choices when it comes to buying auto insurance in Mexico:
1) You can ride your U.S. policy across the border, then stop and buy coverage from an insurer in a border town. There are hundreds of these small offices that exist almost exclusively to meet the tourists and they are buying coverage for a piece of cake.

2) Buy an insurance policy before leave. You can arrange to purchase a Mexican auto insurance policy months before your holiday by working with your insurance company Contact one of the three or four companies in the States that specialize in providing coverage of both sides of the border.
